OVERVIEW

Upper Limb Ataxia: Bridging the Gap between Research and Clinical Application is organized by Summit Professional Education and will be held on Mar 07, 2026.

Course Description:
Ataxia is characterized by a lack of coordination and/or tremor. Individuals with ataxia have a combination of unique atypical manifestations with divergent functional barriers. Despite the distinct clinical manifestations, many clinicians lack an in-depth understanding of the underlying pathophysiology that explains these unique atypical movement patterns, as well as how to custom tailor their approach to meet their needs. To address divergent barriers requires clinicians to "think outside the box" and expand their treatment inventory.

Linking that clinical gap is the aim of this course. Through dissecting research articles and watching real-life examples of individuals with ataxia performing the exercises utilized, the learner will receive customized interventions and strategies to tailor their approach. The primary concentration will be on the upper limb ataxia with a comprehensive approach from assessment to practical interventions with videos, music, and interactive knowledge checks. Demonstrations of adapted equipment and home modifications will assist the learner in expanding their clinical toolbox and feel prepared to meet the unique needs of their patients with ataxia.

Highlights:

  • Investigate evidence-based research to reduce ataxia symptoms followed by video footage demonstrating the utilized exercises for immediate application into the clinic
  • Observe and assess atypical movement patterns andcustomized exercises demonstrated through practical videos from real individuals with a various forms of ataxia
  • Link evidence to practical interventions through an inventory of evidence-based interventions from core to fine motor coordination that can be applied immediately in the clinical setting
  • Explore customized adapted equipment and concretehome modifications to improve functional independence specifically for individuals with ataxia

Learning Objectives:

  • Analyze the different clinical presentations between the main types and main causes of ataxia.
  • Examine the underlying pathophysiology of common clinical characteristics of upper limb ataxia.
  • Identify common standardized testing, positional screening, finger tests, pen and paper tasks for the evaluation and quantification of upper limb ataxia.
  • Apply customized evidence-based coordinative, core/postural, proprioceptive loading and Frenkel exercises to improve upper limb ataxia.
  • Categorize customized compensatory based interventions with various adapted equipment and home modifications to solve occupation-based barriers with upper limb ataxia.
  • Apply skilled terminology for the description and documentation of upper limb ataxia.
