OVERVIEW

Understanding & Addressing Masculinity in the Therapy Room with Boys & Men is organized by Vermont Psychological Association (VPA) and will be held on Jun 05, 2026.

Description:
This workshop is intended to provide psychologists with accurate information about the emotional lives of adolescent and young adult men and to suggest strategies for gender-sensitive, strength-based psychotherapy with this population.  The instructor will help participants to explore their implicit assumptions about male development and males from different racial and ethnic backgrounds and the potential impact of those assumptions on therapeutic work with young men.  We will also discuss the myths and realities about the psychological development and mental health of boys and men, as well as a continuum of masculinity norms, ranging from constricted and toxic norms of masculinity to noble notions of manhood, and the influence of these variations on male behavior.  Next, we will highlight barriers that prevent or discourage young men from participating in psychotherapy; review the relative contributions of the male gender role strain and positive psychology/positive masculinity models to psychotherapeutic work with boys and men; and demonstrate that there is a mismatch between the parameters of conventional psychotherapy and the relational styles of males.  In order to correct for this mismatch, the instructor will help participants explore how they can make gender-sensitive adjustments in the process of psychotherapy with males, including suggestions for establishing rapport and administering interventions with young men based on empirical research that has demonstrated effective practices with young men from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds. Participants will view and critique an instructive video demonstrating the presenter counseling a young man and consider how they can apply the principles of male-friendly, strength-based psychotherapy with young men.
