OVERVIEW

Schedule II Opioid Prescribing is organized by San Fernando Valley Dental Society (SFVDS), Los Angeles Dental Society (LADS) and will be held on Nov 19, 2024.

Description:
Management of acute odontogenic pain is accomplished through a clinical approach that successfully incorporates both opioid and non-opioid analgesics, Dental clinicians must understand the intended roles and limitations of these agents, as well as situations that may preclude their use, by reviewing patient medical histories and developing individualized patient pain management plans. This program will provide an overview of strategies and options available for effectively managing and controlling acute dental pain with opioid and non-opioid analgesics, while also mitigating associated risks. Special emphasis will be given to utilizing CURES to assist in identifying and managing vulnerable patients at risk for substance use disorders, as well as identifying possible "red-flag", or drug-seeking, behaviors.

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Explore opioid and non-opioid analgesic options for acute pain management and control.
  • Explain the intended role and limitations of analgesics in the management of acute dental pain, as well as situations which may preclude their use, based on a patient's underlying medical conditions.
  • Describe how to register for, and utilize, CURES.
  • Discuss techniques for identifying and managing patients at risk for substance use disorders, as well as identifying possible "red- flag", or drug-seeking, behaviors.
