OVERVIEW

Practical Tools for Treating Patients with Intellectual and/or Developmental Disabilities is organized by American Association of Women Dentists (AAWD) and will be held on Sep 17, 2026.

Description:
Children and adults with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities like autism face higher risk of poor oral health due to access barriers, co-occurring medical conditions, difficulties with self-care and prevention, and sensory and dietary challenges. Dental professionals often lack the training and supports to serve these patients well. This session will provide an overview of the IDD population and contextual issues that affect oral health, and introduce 9 practical tools that dental practices can use in their typical practice workflows to improve the safety and effectiveness of interactions with patients with IDD. The tools are printable checklists, forms, and illustrated fact sheets that can improve preparation for visits, communication, and effective follow-up.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the diversity of the IDD population and their oral health risks
  • Understand key points in typical dental practice workflows as opportunities for improving clinical interactions and outcomes
  • Understand how to use 9 practical checklists, forms, and fact sheets to improve dental care for people with IDD
