OVERVIEW

Northern Virginia Dental Society (NVDS) Online CE Program – Pediatric Sleep Apnea is organized by Northern Virginia Dental Society (NVDS) and will be held on Feb 07, 2025.

Description:
Pediatric sleep apnea is a very frequent condition affecting 3-5% of all children.  This presentation will focus on the clinical presentation of sleep apnea in children including the various phenotypic variants that have been identified to date, approaches to the diagnosis of the disease that extend being overnight polysomnography, and description of some of the more important end-organ morbid consequences of sleep apnea in children.  The second presentation will then encompass an improved understanding on the pathophysiology of morbidity in sleep apnea in general. In addition to well-stablished processes such as inflammation, autonomic nervous system imbalances and remodeling, the lecture will also focus on novel mechanisms encompassing gut microbiome, senescence and blood brain barrier permeability.

  • Part 1: Clinical Presentation,  Pathophysiological Considerations and Diagnostic Approaches
  • Part 2: End-Organ Morbidity and its Mechanisms, As Drivers of Phenotypic Variance

Course Objectives:

  • To enable the audience to recognize symptoms and signs associated with an increased risk of sleep apnea in children.
  • To identify the various diagnostic modalities, their advantages and limitations.
  • To recognize phenotypic variance and the potential mechanisms driving morbid consequences of sleep apnea.
