King’s-DOHaD Qualitative Methods Public Short Course: Basics of Cross-Disciplinary Qualitative Health Research is organized by King's College London (KCL) and will be held from Sep 18 - 19, 2023.

Course overview:
This is an introductory qualitative methods short course. This course has been designed to provide the basics of qualitative methods and methodologies in the context of cross-disciplinary health research (whether that is in clinical or academic settings). Academics will draw on their research to navigate delegates through the processes of achieving high quality qualitative research for those just starting out on their qualitative journeys. The course will cover methodological issues from research design through to publication and will provide delegates with basic competencies to successfully take their first steps into qualitative research or gain confidence with qualitative research (if they have undertaken some qualitative research beforehand) in whichever setting they choose. It will practical elements as well as key tips for doing qualitative work correctly, especially for those new to it.

What does this course cover?
Day 1: Cross-Disciplinary Qualitative Health Research (examples of included lectures are: cross-disciplinary working; engaging groups who find healthcare hard to access; current controversies in qualitative practice and ethics; qualitative research for the clinician-scientist; innovations in qualitative research).

Day 2: Qualitative Research from Design to Dissemination (examples of included lectures are: data collection; observations and healthcare evaluations; coding and analyses; integrating qualitative and quantitative data; writing-up).

What will I achieve?
• Confidently select the most appropriate data collection methods (e.g. interviewing, focus groups, textual data) and data-cleaning techniques (e.g. transcription, QDA software management) and undertaken them in future qualitative and mixed-methods studies.
• Appreciate the current controversies, issues, and debates surrounding the use of qualitative methods in cross-disciplinary health research.
• Understand the nature of different qualitative methodologies.
