Description:
Death By A Thousand Nicks – Healing the Wounds of Racial Trauma Through Anti-Oppressive Diagnosis & Treatment (3 CE Credits - Trauma, Cult. Comp., Anti-Oppressive)

Professor Alvin Poussaint described the cumulative impact of microaggressions as "death by a thousand nicks". What might seem small and insignificant can become ingrained into the very fiber of one's being, causing the body to live in a constant state of alert.

This workshop will explore how racialized oppression against the Black community impacts the physical, social, and psychological health of individuals and communities. Participants will explore systemic oppression, evaluate the presence of implicit bias within themselves and their profession and engage in dialogue to consider the application of cultural humility, anti-racist practices and action they can engage in to promote healing, power shifting and racial equity.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the conventional and expanded ACE (Adverse Childhood Experiences) studies and their relevance to community-level adversities.
  • Discuss structures of white supremacy and strategies to become accomplices for anti-racist work
  • Define and identify the role of structural racism in internalized oppression
  • Apply a trauma informed lens to explore the impact of historical trauma from the cradle to the grave.
  • Distinguish between intrapersonal cultural humility and interpersonal cultural humility and how each lends to rapport building and the creation of an environment for healing
  • Identify assessment tools, diagnostic considerations, and healing strategies that build physical and emotional safety, validate lived experience, and empower impacted individuals and communities.
