52nd Union World Conference on Lung Health is organized by International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union) and will be held from Oct 19 - 22, 2021.

The conference theme, Lung Health for All: Solutions for a New Era, explores the challenges facing global health.

Building on the success of last year’s Union World Conference, which was held entirely virtually for the first time, participants will experience an enhanced and innovative virtual event.

The understandable focus on COVID-19 has stalled progress on tuberculosis (TB) and lung health, meaning we need radical new solutions for this interconnected new era.

With the world still in the grip of a lung health pandemic, it is also confronting questions about systemic race relations and how the same vulnerable communities that bear the brunt of TB and HIV have now been hit the hardest by COVID-19.

The world needs a global, cross-sector, action-oriented response that can create the bold change needed to ensure everyone – from the wealthy to the most vulnerable – has equitable access to quality health care.

The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed just what political will and funding can achieve. There is an opportunity to consider radical new solutions for neglected areas of lung health and how these solutions can ensure the development of and access to tools for detection, prevention, and the treatment of TB and lung diseases.

The negative impact of tobacco-use on outcomes for people with COVID-19 is becoming clear, while the tobacco industry exploits the pandemic to improve its public image. We must continue to work together to combat the tobacco epidemic in this new era.

The 52nd Union World Conference on Lung Health will explore solutions to these challenges with the latest science and research. As well as tracks on COVID-19 and its intersections with lung health, the conference programme will feature basic and translational TB research through TBScience and the most pressing issues facing affected communities through Community Connect.
