The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma is organized by Quantum Units Education.

CE Hours:25.00
Course Overview:
The toxic stress that results from trauma often negatively influences brain development and attachment systems, and can greatly impact individuals and societies. This CE course was developed based on Bessel van der Kolk MD's most recent book on body/mind trauma and healing and draws on more than 30 years of research and clinical practice to show how the terror and isolation that is at the core of trauma literally reshapes both the brain and body. New insights into our survival instincts explain why traumatized people experience incomprehensible anxiety and numbing as well as intolerable rage, and how trauma affects their capacity to concentrate, to remember, to form trusting relationships, and even to feel at home in their own bodies.
Course Objectives:
• Discuss the ways in which trauma affects the body, mind, and brain and how individuals respond to the fear and terror that accompanies trauma.
• Identify how trauma impacts thinking, feelings, self-regulation, and resiliency, and the victim’s ability to differentiate between danger and safety.
• Describe the long-term consequences of childhood abuse and neglect, the power of diagnosis in capturing the reality of these experiences, and how such exploitation can alter future relationships.
• Outline the underlying principles that guide trauma healing practices.
• Summarize how EMDR is used to help victims revisit their traumatic pasts without being retraumatized.
• Define how non-traditional therapies and healing practices such as internal family systems therapy (IFS), yoga, mindfulness, neurofeedback, and participation in theater programs may help trauma survivors.
• Review clinical case examples and scientific studies that provide insight into trauma experiences and novel therapeutic approaches.
