Statement of Learning Need:
Every person experiences pain differently. Clinicians in acute care are required to evaluate pain on an individual basis to determine the type of medication and other therapies needed. Consideration of the patient’s biopsychosocial needs will help to improve treatment response and quality of life.
Course Purpose:
To provide health clinicians with knowledge of pain in the acute care setting, varied pain assessment tools and treatments to improve patient care outcomes.
Course Summary:
Pain management requires an individualized plan. Every patient feels and responds to pain differently, and it is critical that pain management strategies for inpatients be tailored to each patient in order to provide adequate pain relief. A variety of analgesics and alternative treatments to assist with pain management are presented. Health clinicians trained in pain treatment strategies that include biopsychosocial factors will be better able to help patients improve in their pain recovery and quality of life.
