Activity Summary :
This article reviews modern recommendations for the management of nosocomial pneumonia, based on the 2016 clinical practice guidelines produced by the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) and the American Thoracic Society (ATS). Definitions and relevant therapy are presented, as there is major differential treatment from the original 2005 guidelines. These changes involve the replacement of the term healthcare-associated pneumonia (HCAP), the use of antibiograms, the retreat of aminoglycoside mono-therapy and the use of adjunctive gasped antibiotic therapy and a recommended treatment duration of 7 days for most patients.
