• recognize that the diagnosis of complete atrioventricular septal defect is the most common diagnosis requiring mechanical mitral valve replacement in this series.
• identify that early mortality is associated with age of operation less than 2 years and concurrent other mechanical valve replacement.
• recognize that for those surviving >90 days after mechanical mitral valve replacement, transplant free survival is only 76% at 20 years.
• recognize that poorer long-term results are seen in patients who are less than 2 years of age at time of mitral valve replacement or received a non-bileaflet prosthesis.
