Description:
This series of articles features guidelines for assessment of caries risk, general principles of examination, anticipatory guidance and preventive counseling, and oral treatment in pediatric dentistry. Results of studies on the use of lasers in pediatric dentistry, the relationship of mutans streptococci to caries incidence, and the effects of dental fluorosis in children are also explored.

Objectives:
After completing the articles, the learner will be able to:
• Understand the assessment of caries risk in contemporary pediatric dentistry, along with clinical decision making guidelines regarding diagnostic, fluoride, dietary and restorative protocols.
• Identify AAPD guidelines on preventive oral health interventions for infants, children and adolescents, which help direct clinical decision making.
• Understand the fundamentals, applications, benefits and limitations of laser use in pediatric dentistry.
• Recognize how mutans streptococci can predict cavity progression in children.
• Compare the prevalence and severity of dental fluorosis between preschoolers who received fluoride varnish applications and those who received a placebo.
