OVERVIEW

Cranial Nerves & The Ocular Motor System is organized by Carrick Institute and will be held from Jan 08 - 10, 2027 at Australian Chiropractic College, Adelaide, South Australia, Australia.

Description:
Complex neurological cases often reveal how much the cranial nerve and ocular motor examination is undertaught in clinical training. When a patient presents with diplopia, facial asymmetry, swallowing dysfunction, or unexplained dizziness, the ability to localize the lesion with precision separates a thorough clinician from an exceptional one. Yet many practitioners leave training without a systematic, integrated framework for applying this knowledge at the bedside.

This course closes that gap. You will build a complete, clinically actionable command of all 12 cranial nerves and the ocular motor system, including functional neuroanatomy, reflex pathways, lesion patterns, and brainstem syndromes. From olfactory pathway dysfunction to internuclear ophthalmoplegia to Wallenberg syndrome, every concept is taught with clinical integration, practical exam technique, and board-level precision.

The cranial nerve and ocular motor examination is one of the most diagnostically powerful tools in clinical neuroscience, yet it remains one of the most underutilized. For clinicians working with complex neuromusculoskeletal, vestibular, concussion, or movement disorder cases, mastery of this examination system is not optional. It is the foundation upon which precise lesion localization, differential diagnosis, and targeted neurological rehabilitation are built.

CNS 03: Cranial Nerves and the Ocular Motor System is a 25-credit-hour advanced clinical neuroscience course that delivers a comprehensive, integration-focused framework for understanding and applying cranial nerve anatomy, function, and clinical examination at the highest level. The curriculum covers all 12 cranial nerves with functional neuroanatomy, fiber type classification, brainstem nuclear organization, foraminal pathways, reflex arcs, and lesion localization. The course moves from foundational organization through the complete ocular motor system, including the vestibulo-ocular reflex, smooth pursuit, saccades, vergence, internuclear ophthalmoplegia, one-and-a-half syndrome, Parinaud's syndrome, and the Guillain-Mollaret triangle. Clinical syndromes including Weber, Benedikt, Wallenberg, Millard-Gubler, and cerebellopontine angle pathology are taught with practical exam correlation throughout.

This course is designed for licensed clinicians who demand depth. It is structured for chiropractic neurologists, functional neurologists, and advanced practitioners who see complex patients and want examination skills that match the sophistication of their clinical questions. Whether you are preparing for board examinations, expanding your neurological rehabilitation practice, or developing greater diagnostic confidence in vestibular and ocular motor cases, this course builds the clinical architecture you need.
