Description:
This course is designed to create a basic understanding of the temporomandibular muscle and joint (TMJ) anatomy, structure, and function, evaluation and differential diagnoses of common TMDs and orofacial pain. Evidence-based training and treatment options are introduced; focused on reducing TMD pain and dysfunction and preventing chronic pain and its consequences.

 Clinical practice for TMD is a shift from procedure-based dentistry to diagnosis-based staged care that is more akin to the medical model of care. Students are introduced to concepts of interdisciplinary and transformative care that include intra-oral splints, physical therapy, pharmacotherapy, and self-care training with risk assessment and medical history screening tools. Students achieve a basic understanding of pain mechanisms and progression from acute TMD to chronic pain and how to prevent progression.

Course Objectives:
This is an introductory course to foster understanding of:

• Importance of TMD & Orofacial Pain to the profession of dentistry & patients
• Basic science of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) & pain mechanisms
• Diagnosis & risk assessment for TMD patients
• Early intervention for acute TMD & self-care strategies to prevent chronic pain
• Evidence-based treatment & interdisciplinary care strategies for TMD
• Differentiating common TMD from complex cases for referral

By taking this course, students shall be granted access to the following five online modules. The online module must be completed before the related In-Person Session
