Description:
Personalized nutrition is increasingly being recognized as a powerful tool in the prevention and treatment of a spectrum of brain and mental health conditions; our nutritional status, cognition, and mental well-being are intricately connected. Mental health, neurological, and substance-use disorders are some of the top contributors to the global burden of disease and disability and to reduced quality of living. Furthermore, conditions like depression, anxiety, and disordered eating have been associated with increased risk of some of the leading causes of death worldwide, such as cardiovascular disease. The COVID-19 pandemic and other tragedies around the world in recent years have brought conversations about mental health into focus in the public sphere.
Educational Objectives:
After participating in this live activity, participants should be able to:
• Discuss evidence regarding the interaction of foods, nutrients, and other dietary compounds with human physiology.
• Explain the impacts that mental health and neurological conditions can have on eating behavior and nutrition.
• Justify the use of personalized nutrition approaches as a therapeutic approach to supporting brain and mental health.
• Identify and address disparities in nutrition science, education, or clinical practice that could negatively impact students, professionals, or patients.
Clinical Learning Objectives:
After participating in this live activity, clinicians should be better able to:
• Apply personalized nutrition strategies in clinical settings to support clients and patients with mental health and neurological concerns.
• Assess and evaluate clients’ nutritional status and eating behaviors.
• Reflect on the importance of thoughtfully attending to clients with neurological and mental health conditions.
