OVERVIEW

When "Bread and Butter" Needs Jam: Practical Solutions for Everyday Challenges in GI, GU and Cytopathology is organized by United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP) and will be held from Oct 05 - 08, 2027 at USCAP Interactive Center, Palm Springs, California, United States of America.

Description:
In pathology practice, every busy day on service presents a diverse array of cases. While many are routine, they often conceal subtle yet significant pitfalls. Others represent genuinely difficult and challenging diagnoses. In addition, new developments — including emerging diagnostic entities, updated grading and staging criteria, novel diagnostic tools, and evolving reporting requirements — continuously enter routine practice.

This course is designed to simulate these real-world diagnostic challenges. Expert faculty in gastrointestinal, urological, and cytopathology will guide participants through a curated selection of interesting and difficult cases. The session will focus on efficiently signing out routine cases while avoiding common pitfalls, applying essential diagnostic algorithms, and integrating the latest updates and best practices in the field. Cytology plays a critical complementary role, particularly in urinary tract evaluation (Paris System) and pancreatobiliary sampling (WHO Reporting System) and is often the first, or only opportunity for early diagnosis. This course is a collaboration between the Chinese American Pathologists Association (CAPA) and USCAP.

Learning Objectives:

  • Apply updated WHO classifications, grading systems, staging criteria, and standardized reporting frameworks in GI, liver, GU, and cytopathology cases.
  • Differentiate benign mimics, treatment-related changes, and reactive processes from Differentiate benign mimics, treatment-related changes, and reactive processes from malignancy using morphology and focused ancillary testing in GI, GU, and cytopathology.
  • Integrate histologic, cytologic, immunohistochemical, molecular, and clinical findings to accurately classify challenging primary and metastatic lesions.
  • Implement efficient, evidence-based sign-out strategies that improve diagnostic accuracy and reporting consistency in high-volume practice settings.
