This pathology symposium will focus on practical discussions of commonly encountered problems in surgical pathology and cytopathology. The goal is to provide useful tips that the speakers utilize in their own practice at the microscope. We aim to address and discuss common problems and avoid an undue focus on esoterica. In this course, renowned subspecialists who are highly sought after for their teaching skills will cover a broad spectrum of cases, including bone and soft tissue pathology, cytology/small biopsies, head and neck pathology, breast pathology, and dermatopathology. Practicing pathologists, fellows, and residents who attend will maintain, develop, and increase their knowledge, competence, and professional performance, with the intent to improve diagnosis and positively impact patient care.

By Attending, You Will Be Able To:

• Evaluate key diagnostic challenges in bone and soft tissue pathology by recognizing benign and malignant pitfalls, determining when molecular testing is necessary and cost-effective in fatty tumors, distinguishing common benign from malignant hyaline cartilage neoplasms, and reliably recognizing common non-neoplastic bone lesions that general surgical pathologists should be prepared to encounter and diagnose in routine practice.
• Improve the accuracy and interpretation of pancreaticobiliary and thyroid cytology specimens by understanding and defining indeterminate thyroid cytology and the role of molecular testing, in conjunction with the Bethesda system; correlating with histology and recognizing key diagnostic features and potential pitfalls in pancreaticobiliary cytology.
• Strengthen diagnostic skills in thyroid, salivary gland, and sinonasal surgical pathology by applying evidence-based approaches, recognizing common diagnostic pitfalls, and incorporating current updates and diagnostic criteria.
• Improve diagnostic and reporting skills in breast pathology by using a systematic approach to papillary lesions, distinguishing atypical ductal hyperplasia from ductal carcinoma in situ, particularly in borderline cases, assessing radiology-pathology concordance in breast core needle biopsies, and applying current reporting practices for HER2-low and ultralow expression.
• Improve diagnostic skills in dermatopathology by recognizing key patterns in common inflammatory skin diseases, incorporating a practical approach to melanocytic tumors, and distinguishing challenging vascular tumors of the skin.
