Description:
The Tutorial on Neoplastic Hematopathology began over 50 years ago by Dr. Henry Rappaport while at the University of Chicago. After 25 years of outstanding leadership from Dr. Daniel Knowles and Weill Cornell Medicine, the tutorial is now again directed by the University of Chicago under the leadership of Dr. Daniel Arber. Continuing in this tradition, the 5-day 2027 course is designed to update physicians on the latest advances in neoplastic hematopathology. The course remains committed to providing participants the most up-to-date information to patient outcomes and the 2027 course will focus on new disease classifications that were published at the end of 2022 with ongoing expanded publications on how to use the classifications.

Through lectures and case discussions related to the classification of hematopoietic tumors, this activity will improve participants’ skill set of various disease entities. Participants will analyze the clinical, morphologic, immunophenotypic, and molecular genetic changes associated with these disorders and what additional tests are necessary for prognosis and targeted therapy. Participants will be updated on the latest advances in neoplastic hematopathology to improve the diagnosis of harmful and even potentially deadly cancers that include Hodgkin lymphoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, plasma cell myeloma, acute and chronic leukemia, myeloproliferative neoplasms, myelodysplastic syndromes, histiocytic tumors, and related disorders. Opportunities to discuss recent advances in the classification of hematopoietic tumors, including clinical and morphologic features, as well as the application and interpretation of immunological and molecular techniques in the diagnosis and classification of these diseases will occur throughout the program.

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Identify how to evaluate and respond to diagnostic problems that arise in neoplastic hematopathology;
• State how to utilize recent advances in the classification of hematopoietic tumors;
• Discuss how to interpret and apply immunologic and molecular genetic findings in the diagnosis of neoplastic hematologic disease;
• Describe how to implement the most recent classifications of hematologic neoplasms and what to expect from the new combined classification;
• Recall new discoveries that might impact future classifications of hematologic neoplasms;
• Analyze the prognostic and therapeutic significance of new molecular genetic markers of these tumors.
