Wound Management Course | Sydney is organized by Australian Hand Therapy Association Inc. (AHTA) and will be held from Oct 09 - 10, 2026 at Sydney Eye Hospital, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

Please note this course will be held at two venues as follows:

  • Friday 09 October: Claffy Lecture Theatre, Level 1 Centre Block, Sydney Eye Hospital, 8 Macquarie Street, Sydney
  • Saturday 10 October: Pullman Sydney Hyde Park, 36 College Street, Sydney

Description:
This course provides online, face-to-face and practical learning opportunities.

Wound management and understanding factors influencing the ability to heal are essential for effective practice as a hand therapist.  You must be able to design and adjust your treatment practices, employing the biopsychosocial model to the individual situation before you, to ensure patient-centred care and best practice.

The Wound Management Course comprises four modules and will be structured as follows.

Module 1
An online module composed of five 30-minute video presentations regarding the science of wound healing presented by Jan Rice.

Module 2

A face-to-face workshop at the Sydney Hospital.  This one-day workshop is presented by Kay Maddison (Hand Clinical Nurse Consultant) and the Hand Therapy team, including Jade Wong, Sarah Walsh and Elaine Leahy.

The workshop will provide you with the hand therapy nuance to wound care, in-depth knowledge of dressing the wounded hand. It will assess practical competence in aseptic technique and suture/clip removal during its practical assessment.

Modules 3 and 4

A face-to-face workshop to be held in Sydney following module 2. This module covers oedema and scar management, presented by Bekk Christensen and Angela Thynne. This workshop will involve a practical assessment of competence in oedema bandaging.

Learning outcomes:
At the completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Apply knowledge from the course to assess and evaluate upper limb wounds, scars and oedema for clients.
  • Apply knowledge from the course to assess and perform appropriate suture removal and oedema management techniques.
  • Use clinical reasoning to interpret the assessment results and diagnose wound, scar and oedema conditions.
  • Outline and defend an evidence-informed, biopsychosocial treatment plan and specific wound, scar and oedema interventions to optimise client outcomes.

This course is an AHTA Elective course.

Elective courses are suitable for practitioners:

  • that are experienced and wish to upskill or revise current best-practice
  • wishing to gain greater knowledge in a specific area of hand therapy
  • wanting continued professional learning (CPD hours)
  • undertaking to complete the Accredited Hand Therapist credential.
