OVERVIEW

The Difficult Airway Course: Critical Care™ is organized by Airway Management Education Center (AMEC) and will be held from May 01 - 03, 2026 at Hyatt Regency Boston, Boston, Massachusetts, United States of America.

Description:
Master the Airway When It Matters Most

When a difficult airway presents in the ICU, there is no time to hesitate - and there may be no backup coming.

The Difficult Airway Course: Critical Care is designed to prepare clinicians to manage high-risk, high-stakes airway situations with confidence, precision, and a clear plan.

Why This Course Is Different

This is not a lecture-based course.

Participants spend the majority of their time:

  • Practicing airway techniques in small-group, hands-on skill stations
  • Managing high-fidelity Code Airway simulations
  • Working through real-world critical care scenarios including hypoxia, shock, trauma, and soiled airways

You will leave with practical skills you can apply at the bedside on your very next shift.

After This Course You’ll Be Able To:

  • Confidently manage failed and difficult airways
  • Choose the right approach and device quickly under pressure
  • Execute surgical airway techniques as part of the plan, not a last resort
  • Apply proven, evidence-based airway strategies in critically ill patients
  • Lead and communicate effectively with the patient care team during airway emergencies

Core Hands-On Skills

  • Advanced Video laryngoscopy techniques
  • Awake airway strategies
  • Surgical airway (Cricothyrotomy)
  • Management of the soiled airway
  • Rescue oxygenation techniques
  • BMV optimization
  • Post-intubation critical care management

Code Airway Stations

Participants take part in immersive Code Airway scenarios, designed to replicate real clinical crises including:

  • Rapid desaturation with failed first intubation attempt
  • Hemodynamically unstable intubation
  • Contaminated / bleeding airway
  • “Can’t intubate, can’t oxygenate” situations

These sessions bring it all together, focusing on:

  • Decision-making under pressure
  • Avoiding common—and dangerous—pitfalls
  • Team leadership and communication

Who Is This Course Is For

  • Critical care and ICU physicians and advanced practice providers
  • Hospitalists managing acutely ill patients
  • Rural providers practicing without immediate backup

Why Should You Attend?

In many settings—especially rural and critical access hospitals—the clinician at the bedside is the most experienced airway provider available. This course prepares you for that reality.
