Part One - Why Does My Jaw Hurt: TMD from a Physiotherapy Perspective
AIM(s): 

  • Provide a physiotherapist’s perspective on TMD assessment and management 
  • Introduce and consolidate practical skills for TMD assessment and management 
  • Support a collaborative, multi-disciplinary approach to TMD management 

Description:
An introductory discussion of a physiotherapist’s perspective on TMD and guided practical of assessment and management techniques. This course will explore and discuss the following topics:
A) TMJ anatomy and functional anatomy
B) TMD diagnosis and classification 
C) Subjective and Objective Examination
D) Treatment and Management
Also included are:
A) Guided hands-on session to practice physiotherapy TMD assessment and management techniques
B) Case studies

Learning Objectives: 

  • Understand TMD definition and diagnosis 
  • Explore non-occlusal causes of orofacial pain  
  • Understand and practice clinical assessment and management techniques 
  • Explore common trajectories of TMD patients 

Part two - Occlusion: The Unstoppable Force and the Immoveable Object 
Description:
A discussion of Occlusal concepts and treatments to develop a more thorough understanding of diagnosing and treating patients with problems caused by difficult occlusal problems.  The course will include:
A) A discussion and list of problems associated the occlusion
B) Examination techniques to assess occlusal issues and problems
C) Treatment alternatives and objectives
D) Treated cases including: severe wear, Establishing occlusal in unusual cases, Preventing constant restorative fracture and loss, TMD occlusal splints. 

Learning Objectives: 
Understand TMD definition and diagnosis

  • Explore non-occlusal causes of orofacial pain
  • Understand and practice clinical assessment and management techniques
  • Explore common trajectories of TMD patients
  • Recognising occlusal problems and causes
  • Assessing patients to understand occlusal forces and their effects on teeth and restorative dentistry.
  • Treatment of severe wear cases.
  • Changing occlusal schemes with composite resin and minor occlusal adjustments.
