Musculoskeletal embolotherapy has emerged as a new interventional radiology treatment for a range of painful musculoskeletal conditions, including osteoarthritis of the knee, frozen shoulder, and tendinopathy. Research has reported on the safety and efficacy of these techniques and highlighted the importance of understanding the anatomy and embolization endpoints of these new procedures.

Physicians taking part in this year’s ESIR course will gain a unique opportunity to obtain hands-on experience of MSK embolotherapy using the latest simulator technology and a specifically designed hands-on live lab. Participants will be able to test their skills, understand the importance of anastomotic and variant anatomy, and recognize embolization endpoints.

Participants will learn about the pathophysiology of knee osteoarthritis (OA) and frozen shoulder and how to examine patients with these conditions. Physicians will be shown how to interpret the relevant radiology when assessing patients and will gain an in-depth understanding of the pertinent arterial anatomy through case-based discussion.  Experts will present cases on genicular artery embolization (GAE) and shoulder embolization, explaining tips and tricks, as well as which kit to use when and how. Cone-beam CT, microwires, catheters, and embolic selection will be covered.

The course will also cover practice development, what data to collect, and what IRs need to know during follow-up of these patients. Orthopaedic surgeons will join the course, enabling participants to gain a complete understanding of where MSK embolotherapy fits into the treatment algorithm for patients with chronic musculoskeletal disease.
