Description:
This course reviews identification and management of many common medical emergencies seen in the dental office. We will review signs and symptoms, protocols, and emergency medication to have available.

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

• Understand the importance of proactive medical emergency preparedness in the dental office.
• Conduct effective patient medical history reviews and risk assessments to identify potential emergency risks.
• Identify and interpret abnormal vital signs and other early warning signs of a developing emergency.
• Assemble and maintain a comprehensive and organized emergency drug and equipment kit.
• Implement appropriate first-line management protocols for common medical emergencies.
• Understand the legal and ethical responsibilities associated with managing medical emergencies.
• Develop and implement an office emergency action plan and conduct regular drills.

Prescribing Controlled Substances:
A review on prescribing protocols and legal requirements for practicing in Alabama.

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

• Understand the classification and regulation of controlled substances.
• Identify appropriate clinical indications for prescribing opioids and other controlled drugs.
• Apply best practices for safe prescribing, documentation, and patient education.
• Recognize signs of drug-seeking behavior and diversion.
• Comply with DEA, state, and professional guidelines.
