IV Therapy Certification Course - Initial or Refresher is organized by Health Care Training Academy (HCTA), Inc. and will be held on Jun 03, 2026 at The Healthcare Training Academy, Hillsborough, New Jersey, United States of America.

Description:
This course aims to certify nurses, nursing students, and those who insert, maintain, and discontinue IVs in their scope of practice. IV therapy is required for numerous healthcare providers with a license to practice healthcare. Your healthcare license MUST delineate your legal scope of practice to manage patients undergoing IV therapy. All RNs can initiate, manage, and discontinue IVs under license from an independent licensed practitioner/with an order.

The content in this course is covered over two modules (the modules do not need to be completed in order):

• Module 1: In-person skills workshop/classroom (approx. 4-6 hours) (duration is based upon group size. Scroll down for schedule)
• Module 2: Home Study: (Online) Didactic program, including the online final examination and course evaluation (approx. 6-9 hours)

Objectives:  (At the end of this program, the learner will be able to:)

• List specific measures that will protect against malpractice suits.
• Describe the differences between a vein and an artery.
• List the veins used to deliver peripheral IV therapy in adults and older adults.
• State the signs, symptoms, treatment, and prevention of nerve damage related to IV therapy.
• Describe the signs, symptoms, causes, treatment, and prevention of hyper/hypovolemia.
• State the causes and treatments of electrolyte imbalances.
• Describe how each solution: isotonic, hypotonic, and hypertonic, impacts the recipient.
• Identify methods of fluid regulation.
• List external factors that can influence the rate of flow.
• Demonstrate the correct calculation of an IV flow rate.
• Identify methods of infection control related to IV therapy.
• State the appropriate peripheral device for the treatment ordered.
• List the three types of peripheral devices.
• List the veins to avoid peripheral access in adults and older adults.
• Identify complications of IV therapy, cause, prevention, and treatment.
• List the components of accurate and complete documentation of IV procedures and complications.
• List the comprehensive assessment criteria for IV therapy in general, hydration, and antibiotic therapies.

Duration:

• The online portion of this course takes approximately 6-9 hours.
• The in-person skills workshop, and skills testing, takes approx 4-6 hours.
