Course Description:
Thyroid nodules are a common finding in the daily practice of cytology and histopathology, including challenges discriminating benign versus malignant thyroid lesions. Join expert surgical, cyto, and molecular pathologists as they navigate the complexities of the thyroid gland. This course will analyze and summarize the changes in the 5th edition of the WHO Classification of Endocrine and Neuroendocrine Tumors, with specific focus on follicular-derived neoplasms. Faculty will also evaluate the recent changes in the third edition of The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology focusing on the indeterminate and suspicious for malignancy categories. While most thyroid neoplasms are epithelial, this course will also dive into mesenchymal lesions of the thyroid gland, especially as they enter the differential of spindle cell or hybrid spindle-epithelioid lesions of thyroid gland and neck. The molecular underpinnings of thyroid diseases will be emphasized, especially as they relate to diagnostic classification and prognosis. Faculty will walk attendees through simple and complex cases and discuss differential diagnoses. Join us on this exciting journey into the secrets of thyroid gland, in a course exploring a broad range of diagnoses that may be encountered in daily practice.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this educational activity, the learner will be able to:

• Recognize the key diagnostic features for the thyroid lesions on histology and cytology.
• Recognize key thyroid tumor subtypes with distinctive molecular profiles and clinical behaviors.
• Develop an algorithmic approach to key categories in evaluation of thyroid lesions on histology and cytology.
• Recognize the key diagnostic features for non-epithelial thyroid lesions.

During the 30-minute Slide Preview session, glass slides are reviewed at the individual microscopes. Participants receive 90 seconds to preview the slide, and then it is passed to the next attendee. Each slide preview session has up to 18 cases. After the Slide Preview, attendees move from the individual microscopes to the multiheaded teaching microscope to start the Case Discussion.
