Improving Clinical Outcomes of Implant Site Preparation Through Ridge Preservation and Optimizing Biomaterial Combinations: A Didactic and Hands-on Course is organized by McGill Continuing Dental Education and will be held on Mar 21, 2026 at McGill Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Course Summary:
In modern clinical practice there is a plethora of surgical and biomaterial-based considerations and techniques that have important impact on the esthetic and functional outcome, and the long-time prognosis of implant rehabilitations. To improve the outcome, implant treatments must be prosthetically driven, but bone availability is often a limiting factor. However, various surgical techniques for the preservation or reconstruction of bone volume are available to the dentist. When paired with the numerous natural and/or synthetic biomaterials that are available for implant site preservation and preparation, this makes the decision-making process challenging. This course will provide an evidence-based approach for ridge preservation surgical treatment planning process to improve the esthetic and functional outcomes. Surgical considerations and techniques with proper use of bone graft materials and barrier membranes will be presented for various potential implant sites. The course will also focus upon the science and different protocols for use of these biomaterials to achieve predictable clinical results. In, addition the hands-on portion of the course will allow the participants to learn how to handle different bone graft materials, barrier membranes, and suturing techniques for implant site preservation and preparation used during various surgical techniques.

Course Objectives:

  • Understand the biology behind bone remodeling and resorption after tooth loss.
  • Understand the surgical techniques used for implant site bone preservation and reconstruction.
  • Understand the science behind successful selection of bone graft materials, membranes, and suturing techniques for various surgical techniques.
  • Use different bone materials used for implant site bone preservation and reconstruction.
  • Perform models alveolar ridge preservation and guided bone regeneration on various hard tissue defect simulation.
  • Recognize the complications and the management of them after alveolar ridge preservation and Guided Bone Regeneration.
