OVERVIEW

Coronal Polishing for Dental Assistants is organized by University of Kentucky (UK) College of Dentistry Continuing Education and will be held on Oct 17, 2026 at University of Kentucky College of Dentistry, Lexington, Kentucky, United States of America.

Course Description:
This eight-hour course is designed to satisfy the Kentucky Board of Dentistry's educational requirements for dental auxiliary personnel who will qualify for certification in coronal polishing under a dentist's direct supervision per the Kentucky Administrative Regulations.

The course consists of the following components as mandated by the Kentucky Board of Dentistry:

  • Didactic/Lecture: The participant must successfully complete a multiple-choice examination, which shall be passed by a score of seventy-five (75) percent or higher.
  • Practical/Pre-clinical: This will be verified by faculty demonstrations and evaluation of participants by the course instructor with follow-up.
  • Practical/Clinical Component: After completing this course, participants are required to obtain five (5) clinical competency examinations on a live patient, supervised by a licensed Kentucky dentist. After each of the five coronal polishing exams, the dentist will need to complete the 'Performance Evaluation Form'.

Learning Objectives:
Upon course completion, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of dental ethics, jurisprudence and the legal understanding of procedures allowed by each dental auxiliary related to coronal polishing and the role of all members of the dental team with regard to coronal polishing.
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of some introductory dental assisting principles including infection control, dental anatomy, and ergonomics.
  • Explain the definition of plaque, types of stain, calculus, and related terminology and topics.
  • Identify the equipment, materials, and supplies needed for coronal polishing.
  • Identify the potential risks and contraindications for coronal polishing.
  • Demonstrate the preferred technique for coronal polishing.
  • Recognize the proper positioning used/ergonomics.
  • Demonstrate clinical competency in performing coronal polishing in a preclinical setting.
  • Successfully complete the multiple-choice examination for the course.
