Basic Microsurgical Skills Course (BMS) 2026 is organized by The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) and will be held on Oct 19, 2026 in Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom.

Description:
This one-day practical course is to provide delegates with an introduction to skills in microsurgery and its applications, including practical skills in basic microsurgical technique and arterial and venous anastomosis. Candidates will be formally assessed throughout the course with a competition and prizes in the final session.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the course delegates will be able to: 

  • Perform basic microsurgical skills, including a thorough pre-operative microscope check, correct handling of microsurgical equipment, suturing and knot tying using correct microsurgical technique on supported latex sheets, then progressing onto unsupported latex strips
  • Perform end-to-end arterial and venous anastomosis on a chicken leg artery and vein using correct microsurgical technique with attention to correct placement, spacing and coaptation of sutures.

The aim of this course is to provide delegates with an introduction to skills in microsurgery and its applications, including practical skills in basic microsurgical technique and arterial and venous anastomosis.
