Description:
This course is designed for physical therapists looking to satisfy the requirements necessary for initial certification, recertification, and maintenance of ABPTS Board-Certification in Sports Physical Therapy as well as athletic trainers providing sidelines care for athletes. This course will cover acute injury and illness management for the athlete, including emergency management systems, bloodborne pathogens and preventing disease transmission, primary and secondary assessment, airway and ventilation management, cardiac and respiratory emergency management, medical emergencies, environmental emergencies, shock, muscle/bone/joint injury management, and head/neck/spine injury management. Please note that this program will not provide a certification in CPR or First Aid.

Course Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:

• Discuss the roles and responsibilities of the emergency medical responder and the components of the EMS system.
• Identify appropriate steps to take to limit transmission of disease.
• List the steps of an on-field primary and secondary assessment.
• Identify the signs and symptoms of a compromised airway and demonstrate management of the unconscious athlete.
• Recognize the signs of cardiac emergencies and demonstrate the provision of care in the chain of survival for cardiac emergencies.
• Recognize the signs of medical emergencies due to environment, anaphylaxis, poisoning, substance abuse and mental status changes.
• Identify the signs and symptoms of shock.
• Demonstrate the management of muscle, bone and joint injuries through proper reduction, fracture care, immobilization and transport.
• Identify the signs and symptoms of head, neck and spine injury and demonstrate proper spine injury management protocol for athletes with and without athletic equipment.
• Identify the signs and symptoms of concussion.
• Identify the signs, symptoms, and acute management steps for injuries to the face, chest, thorax, and abdomen.
