Southeastern Association of Neonatologists (SAN) 38th Annual Conference is organized by Southeastern Association of Neonatologists (SAN) and will be held from May 22 - 25, 2025 at JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort, Marco Island, Florida, United States of America.

Course Objectives:
Thursday

  • Understand how to define BPD and if short term outcomes correlate with longer term outcomes.
  • Understand the factors that contribute to the development of BPD.
  • Understand treatment options for the prevention and treatment of BPD.
  • Recognize variability in post-discharge growth trajectories of preterm infants.
  • Describe feeding plans for breastfed and formula-fed preterm infants after NICU discharge.
  • Identify risks and benefits of introducing complementary feeding in preterm infants.
  • Describe the evidence for the prophylactic use of caffeine in extremely preterm infants.
  • Understand current controversies in the use of caffeine in preterm infants.

Friday

  • Identify how BPD is defined, diagnosed and treated and how those treatments lead to outcomes.
  • Know how to develop a BPD Service to provide optimal therapies.
  • Understand the results of recent completed and current genomic sequencing trials in newborns.
  • Identify the ethical considerations associated with integrating genomic sequencing at birth.
  • Understand difficulties developing drugs and devices for children.
  • Understand how real-world data and genomic sequencing will improve drug development.
  • Describe methods to evaluate GER in preterm infants.
  • Understand the risks and benefits of treating signs of GER in preterm infants.

Saturday

  • Examine the evidence for using donor milk to attain early enteral nutrition, reduce healthcare costs and decrease length of stay.
  • Understand barriers to use of donor milk in the NICU and how to overcome them.
  • Understand the scope of the problem of infant mortality from a global perspective.
  • Recognize barriers and disparities preventing better neonatal outcomes in developing countries.
  • Understand new ways to prevent intestinal inflammation in necrotizing enterocolitis.
  • Review new directions in NEC, including model systems and personalized medicine approaches.
  • Better understand how maternal factors contribute to the development of NAS.
  • Better understand the definition, assessment, and treatment of NAS.

Sunday

  • Describe the current use of antibiotics in the NICU.
  • Describe methods to reduce antibiotic overuse in the NICU.
  • Appreciate the status of integrating novel salivary diagnostic platforms in neonatal care.
  • Understand saliva’s ability to assess inflammation, infection, and development in the newborn.
  • Identify how standardized guidelines for key interventions improve survival and outcomes in extremely preterm infants.
  • Recognize how enhancing parental involvement improves parent engagement and outcomes.
  • Learn about potential new serum biomarkers for necrotizing enterocolitis.
  • Discuss new potential stool biomarkers for necrotizing enterocolitis.
