Description:
This hands-on course includes:

• Review of anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system
• Overview of respiratory deficits and why mechanical ventilation is needed
• Overview of ventilators, tracheostomy tubes, humidification, suctioning, and the various oxygen delivery methods.
• Time for hands-on interaction with respiratory equipment, including troubleshooting alarms and allowing for return demonstration.

Objectives:

• Describe the indications for mechanical ventilation in the pediatric patient.
• Describe the function and type(s) of artificial airways utilized with mechanical ventilation.
• Describe and demonstrate the use of respiratory support equipment, including airway clearance and alarm recognition, in the pediatric population.
• Describe complications associated with mechanical ventilation and how to implement quality care to avoid patient distress.
• Describe emergency measures and necessary actions for supporting an unstable respiratory patient on mechanical ventilation.
