Pediatric Pearls Developmental and Behavioral Health 2025 is organized by Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago and will be held on Apr 11, 2025 at DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Chicago - Oak Brook, Oak Brook, Illinois, United States of America.

Overview:
This one-day symposium for the pediatric primary care team  will showcase  pediatric experts ready to address some of the common issues confronted by healthcare providers dealing with behavior and development. The goal is to share best approaches and guidelines on how to manage the patient.  We are pleased to present lectures on  screening and testing for developmental disorders as well as their treatment plans, autism, navigating the EI system, feeding concerns commonly found in children with developmental issues,  neurodiversity in the clinical practice, genetic evaluations for autism, epilepsy in the autistic child, insomnia and other sleep disorders  in autistic children, dysregulated behavior and aggression and more. 

Objectives:

• Efficiently interpret developmental testing scores documented in developmental behavioral pediatrics consultation notes
• Discuss developmental screening and testing options available for use in the primary care setting
• Describe the current problems with “bottlenecking” in the process of obtaining an Autism diagnosis
• Discuss methods of confirming the diagnosis of Autism in the Medical Home
• Describe a few of the most common tools used in the process of confirming the diagnosis of Autism
• Identify effective strategies for clearly and concisely explaining various developmental disorders (such as autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, Global developmental delay) to caregivers
• Discuss the impact of thorough patient education on a family’s experience throughout the process of evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment
• Demonstrate skills to support families in coping with the various challenges associated with developmental disorders
• Identify differences from early intervention referrals and services
• Identify the role of the pediatrician in initiating early intervention services and how to trouble shoot access
• Identify community resources before and after age 3
• Describe a few evidence-based therapies and supports for children with autism
• Identify conditions in which specific treatments may be more or less appropriate
• Identify therapy options for children with autism/DD
• Identify 3 Chicagoland resource sites to provide to the patients with autism or developmental differences
• Identify 2-3 Chicagoland resource sites to provide to patients with special education advocacy needs
• Discuss the concepts of ableism and neurodiversity
• Appreciate that the neurodiversity movement applies to both our patients and members of our team, including colleagues and trainees
• Name and describe commonly used genetic tests
• Describe possible outcomes of genetic testing
• Recognize when genetic testing and /or referral to genetics should be considered
• Identify when an autistic patient is experiencing symptoms and signs that may be caused by epilepsy or seizures
• Identify the diagnostic process for seizures/epilepsy in patients with autism
• Weight diagnostic information related to seizures/epilepsy in autistic patients
• Identify initial age and presentation for problematic feeding in autism
• Explain the importance of core/foundational food item
• Review  the co-morbid issues that can present as dysregulated behavior and/or aggression in pediatric patients with ASD
• Explain the behavioral treatment and support options that can assist in modifying symptoms that contribute to dysregulated behavior in ASD
• Review  psychopharmacology treatment options that can assist in modifying symptoms that contribute to dysregulated behavior in ASD
• Learn about sleep disturbances in children with autism
• Discuss behavioral approaches to sleep disorders in autism
• Review pharmacological treatment options for insomnia in autism
• Review  the co-morbid issues that can present as dysregulated behavior and/or aggression in pediatric patients with ASD
• Explain the behavioral treatment and support options that can assist in modifying symptoms that contribute to dysregulated behavior in ASD
• Review  psychopharmacology treatment options that can assist in modifying symptoms that contribute to dysregulated behavior in ASD
