OVERVIEW
Freeze Drying for Biologics/Pharmaceutics is organized by Fleming and will be held from Nov 13 - 14, 2025 at Vienna, Wien, Austria.
Description:
With the rise of biologics and new types of biotechnological drugs, which are usually very sensitive and unstable, reliable freeze drying in Pharma & Biotech is becoming more important than ever.
Freeze-drying is considered a delicate drying process. However, it can cause numerous stresses that induce chemical and physical instabilities. Subsequently, the inclusion of suitable excipients along with optimizing the process parameters is crucial to attain stable lyophilizates with high-quality attributes. It is also a high-cost technology with a substantial environmental footprint, so process optimisation is an important consideration.
This practical course will focus on the freeze-drying process from formulation and thermal analysis to cycle development and optimization, packaging and troubleshooting.
Benefits of attending:
- Deep dive into the freeze-drying process, together with the factors that in-fluence the product and process
- Characterization to determine a product critical temperature prior to freeze-drying
- Review formulation development to gain understanding of typical excipi-ents and their purpose in formulation
- Learn about typical CQAs in freeze-dried products, what factors influence these attributes, and methods of monitoring and controlling attributes
- Consider the energetics of the freeze-drying process
- Gain insights into monitoring of the freeze-drying process and when pri-mary drying is complete
- Consider the challenges of scale up and economic manufacture
Topics:
- Freeze drying process overview
- Understanding thermal properties
- Freezing, primary & secondary drying
- Formulation design & function
- Container formats & their impact
- Back to the cycle
- Equipment
- Quality control, testing & troubleshooting
- Future of freeze drying for biologics/pharmaceutics
