This Workshop draws on leaders in Global Health Education, International Education, Higher Education, Community Engagement, and Experiential Learning and includes best practices, case studies, demonstrations, curriculum tools, checklists, peer sharing, and critical discussion

This Faculty Development Workshop allows participants to gain essential ‘how-to’s’ of integrating experiential learning into coursework and programs. This includes:

  • Development of measurable learning outcomes
  • Ethical engagement for both participants and the communities in which they are working
  • Assessment and evaluation of experiential engagement
  • Issues of inclusion, accessibility, and engagement
  • Competency-based education
  • Logistical, financial, and safety considerations..

Why?
Experiential learning is seen to be an important component of Public Health and Global Health education programs. Institutions are often challenged with limited bandwidth, expertise, or partnerships to meet student demand. This Workshop allows faculty and administrators to develop experiential learning components to on-campus programs, with a focus on international and global community-based education.

By attending this program, participants can expect to:

  • Identify the strengths and opportunities of various educational models for integrating experiential learning into undergraduate and graduate global health curriculum;
  • Review common institutional structures, curricular tools, assessments, and competency guidelines to enhance student learning;
  • Overcome key challenges to offering experiential learning by institutional type and structure, student body size and experience, faculty and staff FTE, and community partnerships;
  • Engage with faculty, staff, and administrators from a variety of disciplines and institutions to explore collaborations both at the course and curricular level;
  • Strengthen experiential program or course with dedicated time to integrate practices into your own curricular structure and time for peer review and critical feedback.
