Basic Course in Sports Medicine is organized by Sports Health Care Training Foundation / Stichting Opleidingen in de Sportgezondheidszorg (SOS) and will be held from Mar 13 - 15, 2025 at National Sports Centre Papendal, Arnhem, Gelderland, Netherlands.

The Basic Course is intended for general practitioners, company doctors, insurance doctors, basic doctors, rehabilitation physicians and other physicians interested in sports medicine or working in sports healthcare

  • Do you sometimes get the feeling that you are not well-qualified in examining the musculoskeletal system?
  • Do you want to develop yourself further and expand collaborations with specialists?
  • Do you want to provide your patient with good advice on chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity and refer them to the right specialist?

What can you expect?
This three-day course is very interactive and practice-oriented in design. What you have learned can be applied in practice the next day. These days you will work a lot on the basis of case studies (sports injuries, disorders of other organ systems). There are workshops, such as exercise for healthy people and for people with a chronic condition, there are skills training on the physical examination of the musculoskeletal system and every day there is a sports session in which you will move/do sports yourself.

Contents of the basic course"
The following topics are central:

  • The field and area of ??work of sports medicine and the new position of the sports physician as a medical specialist in the healthcare system;
  • Basic disciplines and factors influencing exercise, exercise and pathophysiology of the cardiovascular, pulmonary, locomotor and metabolic systems, the role of sports nutrition and nutritional supplements and the effects of drugs (including doping) on ??exercise/sports;
  • The role of exercise and sports in the prevention and (adjuvant) treatment of (chronic) diseases, such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases;
  • Common (overuse) injuries and other undesirable effects of sports (including overtraining, respiratory problems), symptoms, diagnosis and treatment;
  •  Prevention/guidance with sports medical examinations and sports assessments, specific sports medical topics, such as exercise-induced asthma and sports heart. Prevention, sports medical advice and guidance of individual athletes, teams and events.

Learning objectives:
After this three-day course you will have:

  • Knowledge of the field and area of ??work of sports medicine, the specific expertise of sports medicine and the position of sports medicine in health care;
  • Knowledge acquired of the health-promoting effects of sports activities;
  • Knowledge acquired of common adverse effects of sports participation;
  • Knowledge and skills acquired to formulate sports/exercise advice for healthy non-athletes and persons with a (chronic) condition; knowledge and skills acquired with regard to the prevention of sports-related conditions;
  • Knowledge and skills acquired in the field of diagnosis and treatment of common sports-related conditions.
