The treatment of degenerative and rheumatic diseases of the upper extremities places high demands on the treating hand surgeon. Joint replacement is not always the first option, but sometimes it is not the last.

Given the increasingly better understanding of joint anatomy, biomechanics, and function, as well as the increasingly optimized development of the corresponding implants, joint replacement surgery is becoming increasingly important in the treatment algorithm for destructive joints. Differentiated preoperative diagnostics, perioperative management, the implantation technique of the prostheses, and individualized follow-up care are crucial for the treatment outcome.

In this primarily practice-oriented course on human specimens for physicians, scientific lectures will initially convey the current state of knowledge in combination with tips and tricks regarding both prosthetic implantation and the aftercare of the respective procedures.

All surgical steps on human specimens, from selecting the access and the composition of the prostheses to be used to the implantation technique itself, are discussed within the team prior to implantation. Qualified experts are available to provide you with individualized support. The implantation of the respective prostheses is performed independently on the distal forearm and hand in groups of two, and on the proximal forearm in groups of four, on human specimens with intact soft tissue, with individual support from experienced medical instructors. The results of the implantations are presented by the respective team using postoperative X-ray images and discussed together. Several image intensifiers are available for this purpose.
