This educational activity is delivered through nationally recognized leaders in Emergency Medicine.   The course provides opportunities for attendees to learn about current and progressive trends in the practice of emergent, urgent, and critical care. The course provides a setting where attendees will practice their own decision-making and manual skills with concurrent feedback and instruction. The design is concise, high yield sessions with audience participation. The course will enhance knowledge in cardiac in cardiac arrest, airway management in cardiac arrest, pediatric critical care, pediatric respiratory distress, left ventricular assist devices, anticoagulation in pulmonary embolism, physician wellness, professionalism, delirium in the ED. Competencies will be ensured through small group workshops, panel discussions, question and answer, and audience response.

Educational Methods:

  • Interactive lectures with expert panels will be utilized to facilitate dissemination of cutting-edge information.
  • Case studies and discussions will highlight conditions that are challenging in clinical practice.
  • Expert panel discussions will provide an opportunity for experts to present differing viewpoints on audience-driven topics.
  • Journal club to review key literature that informs clinical care.

Educational Objectives:

At the end of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Care of patients with cardiac arrest is increasingly evidence based.  CPR is now one of the few actions proven to be associated with survival.  The approach to CPR impacts survival.

         * Attendees will utilize age based practice during CPR.

         * Attendees will participate in team-based CPR

  • Pediatric respiratory distress is a frequent complaint in Emergency Departments, Urgent Care settings, and primary care settings.  Guidelines and the approach to children with respiratory complaints is evolving and practice is changing.

         * Attendees will distinguish bronchiolitis from acute asthma exacerbation.

         * Attendees will utilize updated guidelines in the evaluation and management of pediatric patients with respiratory distress.

  • Children presenting with a limp create a broad differential diagnosis.

         * Attendees will approach children who are limping with informed diagnostic modalities.

  • Increasing numbers of people are living with left ventricular assist devices.   The emergent diagnosis and care of patients with left ventricular assist devices is novel.

         * Attendees will use an informed approach to diagnosis and treatment in patients with left ventricular assist devices.
