OVERVIEW

The NEXUS - Nurturing, Excelling, and Unifying Sisters in Medicine Conference is organized by The Association of Black Gastroenterologists and Hepatologists (ABGH) and will be held from Sep 27 - 29, 2024 at The Times Center, New York, United States of America.

Description:
The Association of Black Gastroenterologists and Hepatologists (ABGH) exists to promote health equity in Black communities, advance science, and develop the careers of Black gastroenterologists, hepatologists, and scientists. Data shows that racial/ethnic concordance breeds higher patient experience ratings and patient ratings of care, and increased likelihood to utilize healthcare screening services. A 2023 JAMA study found that in U.S. counties with more Black physicians, Black people lived longer. These stats, coupled with the reality that Black women are woefully underrepresented in medicine and science, necessitates a call to action.

The NEXUS Solution:
ABGH’s inaugural NEXUS (Nurturing, EXcelling, and Unifying Sisters in Medicine) Conference centers the perspectives of Black women in medicine. With a stark look at issues that specifically plague the advancement of Black women physicians and scientists, ABGH will tackle how to mitigate and overcome these obstacles while providing support, peer mentorship and affirmation, and personal and professional growth. This conference serves to build the longevity and relevance of these goals and the skills necessary to achieve them.

Objectives:
• Identify barriers and solutions to navigate effective career advancement in the context of intersectionality
• Understand how to capitalize on professional resources to advance health equity
• Discuss ways in which racism in medicine weaponizes the concept of professionalism in daily practice and protocols and how to overcome these systemic obstacles
• Develop skills to allow Black women physicians and scientists to lead in their careers, contribute to research, professional collaborate and enrich the pathway to increase the number of Black women in    medicine
• Explore family planning options and learn about infertility rates in Black women physicians, especially in procedural fields
