OVERVIEW

Neurorehabilitation in a Hospital Stroke Unit is organized by Netherlands Paramedical Institute (NPi) / Nederlands Paramedisch Instituut (NPi) and will be held from Mar 06 - 16, 2024 at Hotel de Bilderberg, Oosterbeek, Gelderland, Netherlands.

Description:
The length of stay of a patient with a stroke in a hospital stroke unit is becoming shorter and the role of acute interventions such as thrombolysis and thrombectomy is becoming increasingly important. Adequate functional prognostics are essential for adequate triage of stroke patients. There is still a lot of uncertainty about the role of early mobilization, partly based on the AVERT trial (A Very early Rehabilitation Trial).

The course 'Neurorehabilitation on a hospital stroke unit' is specifically intended for hospital physiotherapists who work with stroke patients and discusses contemporary insights into the diagnosis and prognostics of stroke patients in the acute phase.

The first day of the course will focus on the theory surrounding clinical symptoms and manifestations of a stroke, thrombectomy/thrombolysis and imaging techniques. Subsequently, the importance of early mobilization, within 24 hours after a stroke, in the hospital stroke unit, will be discussed. This is done on the basis of the treatment guidelines 'Guideline Cerebral infarction and cerebral haemorrhage' of the Dutch Association for Neurology (2017) and the KNGF 'Treatment protocol for physiotherapy in patients with a cerebral infarction or cerebral haemorrhage in the hospital stroke unit (2021).
This is followed by early physical neurological diagnosis and early screening of patients in the stroke unit by the physiotherapist. In the afternoon of the first day of the course, early diagnosis and prognosis (with regard to basic ADL skills, walking skills and arm/hand dexterity) will be central. The role and profile of the paramedic within the MDO consultation will also be discussed, as well as triage, transfer and chain care.

The second day of the course will focus on practice: clinimetry on the stroke unit and practical skills with regard to mobilization and prognostics based on case studies.

Additional details will be posted as soon as information is available.
