OVERVIEW

Society of Anesthesia and Sleep Medicine (SASM) 13th Annual Meeting is organized by Society of Anesthesia and Sleep Medicine (SASM) and will be held on Oct 13, 2023 at Hilton San Francisco Union Square, San Francisco, California, United States of America.

Description:
Sleep disorders are highly prevalent in the general population, and greatly impact peri-operative and hospital outcomes. There is emerging data and innovation about diagnosing and managing patients with sleep disorders in the inpatient and peri-operative settings. This course is aimed at professionals in the fields of anesthesiology, sleep medicine, critical care medicine, and hospital or inpatient medicine.

The course discusses the most up-to-date treatment approaches for insomnia, hypersomnia, and sleep disordered breathing. World renown experts will discuss the links between sleep disorders and opioid use, mood disorders including depression, and PACU outcomes. Furthermore, the course will address health disparities and barriers to care for sleep disorders in the general and operative population.

Experts will also discuss controversies in opioid use in the setting of sleep apnea and its role in hospital deaths and other morbid outcomes. Finally, the course will present the society's newly published consensus guidelines on diagnosing and managing sleep apnea during pregnancy, a collaborative effort by the Society of Anesthesia and Sleep Medicine (SASM) and the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology (SOAP); and updates from the collaboration between SASM, the Society of Ambulatory Anesthesia (SAMBA), and the Society of Critical Care Anesthesiologists (SOCCA) on the perioperative management of sleep apnea.

Program Objectives:
The objective of this meeting is to provide a forum for discussions pertaining to the common grounds between sleep and anesthesia. The goal  is to promote excellence in medical care, research and education in anesthesia, sleep medicine and perioperative medicine.

Learning Objectives:
To identify and address present clinical practice gaps, learners will explore the following gaps existing today in care of patients with sleep-disordered breathing and the nexus with perioperative care.

Learners will:
Describe factors associated with pediatric opioid pain requirements in PACU.
• Recognize the nexus between depression, insomnia and other sleep disorders.
• Describe the diagnosis, and treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Pregnancy.
• Identify social determinants of health and health care disparities in sleep disorders.
