Description:
The Center for Medical Simulation offers one-day intensive workshops on Anesthesia Crisis Resource Management for anesthesiologists who must meet the MOCA ® Part 4 simulation requirement. The CMS Anesthesia Crisis, Resource Management workshop is designed for anesthesiologists who want to improve their ability to manage critical events. These workshops will focus on the teamwork skills and generic knowledge needed to manage any rare but critical anesthesia event. There will also be opportunities for learning specific skills. Participants who need MOCA® certification can take turns as primary anesthesiologists caring for patients during the workshops.

Course Objectives:
Participants will:
• Review the principles of Crisis Resource Management (CRM), including their application in real clinical settings, cross-monitoring, and situational awareness.
• Use communication strategies to manage events, including the role and responsibilities of the event manager, using the "Name, Claim Aim" paradigm, handoffs, SBAR-style communication, assertion techniques, including "Two Challenges," and advocacy/inquiry.
• Practice diagnostic problem-solving and avoidance of fixation strategies, and become familiar with Emergency Manuals to treat patients during high cognitive loads.
• Develop strategies to change culture, with an emphasis placed on inviting input from all members of the team and encouraging them to speak up.
