Course Objectives:
Oral pathology is not an exact science. In order to achieve a proper diagnosis and subsequent treatment plan communication between clinicians and the oral pathologist is vital. In this lecture we will take a look at difficult oral pathology cases which were solved not only by what was seen under the microscope but also by corroborating with the surgeon, other health care professionals and the use of diagnostic tools to arrive at a definitive diagnosis. Selecting the proper treatment protocol rests heavily on correct interpretation of the pathology report. The talk will focus on mucosal and connective tissue lesions with an in-depth conversation on reading pathology reports and selecting treatment plans for lesions affecting these areas. A discussion on what happens behind the scenes in the laboratory will also be addressed. In addition, how pathologists are using immunohistochemistry and molecular studies to further classify lesions and the changing landscape of pathology and treatment of diseases will be discussed.
