Although changes to DNA are responsible for the evolution of the genome and the diversity of antibodies, genomic instability is the root cause of a wide variety of diseases, including cancer, developmental defects, and dementia. In most cases, several different DNA repair processes can eliminate DNA damage and other replication blocks that pose a risk to the genome. The selection of DNA repair pathways, and more specifically, the dependence on error-prone as opposed to error-free, is something that is both fascinating and perplexing. In addition, the dysregulation of repair pathway choice might result in pathological processes being triggered. During this conference, we will talk about the delicate equilibrium of the pathways responsible for the genome's maintenance. We are going to talk about how natural processes like replication and transcription can pose a threat to the stability of the genome, how the genome can be changed in cancer, signatures of genome instability in human disease, and how cells control the inherent plasticity of the replication and repair machinery that they have. Our goal is to bring together researchers from a wide variety of scientific subfields who share an interest in understanding the myriad of processes that affect DNA metabolism and the molecular and biophysical principles that keep the genome stable while allowing for some degree of flexibility.
Educational Need:
The integrity of the genome is the cornerstone of human health, and a wide variety of disorders can arise from even the slightest breakdown in the cellular machinery responsible for maintaining our genome. At this conference, we will concentrate on developing areas within the genome biology discipline that has received much attention over the past few years. More specifically, we will discuss large-scale studies on genome evolution and mutational signatures combined with the interplay of DNA metabolism, RNA metabolism, and DNA repair within the context of sub-nuclear compartments. Attendees at all levels, including students, post-doctoral fellows, and faculty, will be presented with revolutionary new ideas and cutting-edge technologies that will define the area of genomic stability in the future. The conference aims to foster scientific cooperation and make it easier for junior researchers to network with senior experts.
