Description:
The 3-days of Radiation emergency medicine course is offered by REAC/TS as a part of the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education The course focuses on practical aspects of managing the initial care of patients who have been irradiated or contaminated through hands-on lectures and practical exercises.
The course concentrates on the basic principles of radiobiology, as well as the medical treatment and management of patients affected by nuclear or radiological incidents. Topics include radiation physics; radiation detection/measurement/identification; early evaluation and treatment of acute radiation syndrome (ARS), acute cutaneous injuries and internal contamination; contamination control; and mitigating risks to patients, providers, and facilities.
The entire set of principles is implemented in a culminating hands-on exercise that involves live patients who have replicable injuries and transferable radioactive contamination.
