Accreditation:
8 clinical hours (4 lecture, 4 participation)

Overview & Learning Objectives:
All dental assistants in Louisiana must comply with the state laws that govern dentistry before they can take dental x-rays. This course meets the requirements of Louisiana State Board of Dentistry, as defined by the Louisiana Dental Practice Act R.S. 37:792. The Mississippi State Board of Dental Examiners also approves this course. Our faculty will complete their requirements by giving a written test. Please let us know when you register if your work will be in Mississippi.

This illuminative course has been created especially to train auxiliary staff in accurate intraoral radiography. Practical experience in radiographic technique, darkroom techniques, and mounting intraoral-x-rays will all be given. It will be stressed that long cone paralleling is possible. In theory and practice, the bisecting of the angle technique will also be discussed. Each participant will need to complete a full mouth set of radiographs on a dried skull. To achieve satisfactory results, one must have a good understanding of all the factors. The theory presented will only be as comprehensive as the participant needs to understand the various techniques and the background to safe and efficient dental x-ray equipment use.

After completing this sermonic course, participants should be better able to:
• Maximize radiation protection for yourself and your patient when imaging diagnostic radiographs
• Properly place Rinn Instruments intraorally
• Analyze the radiographic images differently depending on what instruments were used
• Correct errors caused by improper angulation (elongation, forshortening, or overlapping)
• Should be able to reduce gag reflex on patients
• Should know which technical factors to change increase or decrease film density/contrast
