OVERVIEW

2022 Symposium Update in Allergy and Immunology & Rhinoscopy Hands-On Workshop is organized by USF Health’s Office of Continuing Professional Development (OCPD) and will be held from Jan 20 - 22, 2022 at Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS), Tampa, Florida, United States of America.

Target Audience:
This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of internal medicine, pediatric, family medicine, emergency medicine, and allergy/immunology specialist physicians and residents. The target audience also includes pharmacists, APPs and RNs.

Description:
The USF Health Divisions of Allergy and Immunology’s 2022 Symposium & Rhinoscopy Hands-On Workshop Update in Allergy and Immunology will focus on the latest breakthroughs and recommendations in allergy and immunology. Topics include airway smooth muscle structure and function; immune response and COVID-19; food allergies – testing and challenges; pathogenesis and treatment of severe asthma; and asthma and obesity, biologic markers and osteoporosis. The rhinoscopy hands-on workshop is designed to train clinicians in the use of fiberoptic rhinolaryngoscopy to evaluate upper airway diseases. The workshop provides hands-on procedure training using simulation as well as standardized patients to measure performance in a safe environment. Upon successful completion of the workshop, participants are expected to obtain a higher comfort level and familiarity with the rhinolaryngoscopic examination of the upper airway.

Symposium:
The Symposium will focus on the latest breakthroughs and recommendations in allergy and immunology. Topics include airway smooth muscle structure and function; immune response and COVID19; food allergies, testing and challenges; pathogenesis and treatment of severe asthma; and asthma and obesity, biological markers and osteoporosis. There will also be a breakout rhinoscopy skills lab available on the first day of the symposium.

Rhinoscopy Workshop:
The Rhinoscopy Workshop will consist of a didactic lecture, cadaveric lab, and rhinoscopy simulation using live standardized patients. This workshop is for physicians only and is limited to 20 participants. After this activity the physician should be able to perform diagnostic examination of the upper airway with a flexible rhinoscope. This workshop will take place on the first day of the symposium, Friday, January 21, 2022 from 7:30 am to 12:00pm and will be held concurrently during the time of the first plenary sessions of the symposium. Separate registration is required for this event.

Objectives:
As a result of participating in this activity, participants should be able to:
• Describe the complexity of airway smooth muscle function and response to medications.
• Recognize the importance of the innate verses the adaptive immune systems.
• Discuss Covid-19 as well as past and possible future epidemics.
• Recognize and manage severe asthma with and without monoclonal antibodies.
• Describe the epidemic of food allergy and new treatments.
• Discuss obesity and its impact on asthma and its treatment.
• Identify different rhinitis phenotypes and the pathogenesis of acute and chronic rhinosinusitis.
