College of Diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (COD-ABPD) 2021 Fall Study Club is organized by College of Diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (COD-ABPD) and will be held from Oct 21 - 23, 2021 at Four Seasons Resort and Residences Jackson Hole, Tenton Village, Wyoming, United States of America.

Course Overview:
Paediatric dentists have an important role to play in the appropriate management of the child patient who has experienced a traumatic dental injury (TDI). Children and adolescents with traumatic dental injuries regularly present to a paediatric dental practice on an emergency basis or for continued care subsequent to the traumatic injury. Management of patients often require decision making on complex issues and multi-disciplinary care is frequently advised to improve outcomes following the injury.  The International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT) publish guidelines exist for the acute management of traumatic dental injuries and these were updated in 2020. Many other clinical issues arise subsequent to the traumatic event. Understanding and managing these complications is also an essential skill for paediatric dentists. 

The aim of these presentations is to highlight the important role of the paediatric dentist in managing both parents, child and the specific injury following a traumatic dental injury. The current knowledge base on the management of traumatic dental injuries, both in acute situations and in the long-term follow on care for the child will be discussed and illustrated using case based learning and active discussion.

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the participant will:
• understand the healing potential of oral tissues following injury
• understand the scientific rationale for the management of acute dental injury in primary and permanent dentitions.
• be able to perform a thorough examination for correct diagnosis of a TDI
• be able to interpret clinical and radiographic signs following a TDI
• understand the structure of the IADT guidelines and their scientific basis
• be aware of various clinical outcomes and options for management of the injured tooth
• recognise the importance of multidisciplinary care in maximising successful outcomes
• be aware of the importance of communicating with parents and managing expectations
• recognise the psycho-social impact on the child and family
• actively promote and communicate prevention of injury in their communities
