The Barrow Neurological Institute Division of Neurological Surgery declares the Spetzler Microneurosurgery Course, with the course director, Michael T. Lawton and special guest, Robert F. Spetzler. BNI Neurosurgery Faculty, along with requested guest faculty, will begin a didactic-practical course in neurosurgical approaches and anatomy consolidated with a clinical association of cerebrovascular and brain tumor management of the anterior regions of the cranium and skull base. This session is designed for neurosurgery residents, fellows and addresses the surgical anatomy, surgical approaches, tactics, and clinical review. It is a full 2-day course created with high-end instructions and discussions for 24 participants. Didactic guidance will feature 3D and digital video microanatomy, recorded surgery, and correlated studies for cerebrovascular and tumor pathology. The clinical information is used to make the practical anatomical dissection practice live. Exquisitely protected cadaver tissue with a vascular injection that will provide the platform for long dissection periods led by a master at the head station with other faculty mentors. Each station will have state-of-the-art instrumentation and microscopes.
Objectives:
• Stay closely familiar with micro neurosurgical anatomy for posterior region cranial and skull base surgical approaches
• Learn relevant visualization, technique, and approaches for neurosurgery at the skull base
• Associate with the clinical-pathological information with the analogous anatomic region
• Merge anatomy and pathology data into decision-making for selection of various surgical approaches
• Investigate, discuss, and learn benefits from experienced neurosurgical faculty for surgical treatment of diagnostics at the posterior region skull base
• Practice surgical strategies that utilize image guidance assistance with employed knowledge from didactic and discussion sessions on preserved-injected cadaver specimens
