The USC Geriatric Dentistry Annual Update Symposium

The USC Geriatric Dentistry Annual Update Symposium is organized by Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of University of Southern California (USC) and will be held on Oct 11, 2019 at University of Southern California School of Dentistry, Los Angeles, California, United States of America. Synopsis:
Today more than ever older adults are seeking dental care in far greater numbers then in previous decades. Additionally, as their life spans lengthen the number of seniors with dental challenges in the population increases. Specific to this population are factors such as complex medical histories. Social profiles are also becoming more complex, with a greater need for support systems, and functional capabilities. Oral health findings can also be highly variable, often compounded by a lifetime of poor treatment or neglect, which often included by the negative side effects of medications. Many individuals or their families expect to maintain or restore their dentition and receive regular oral health care with the latest innovative materials and technology available. Recognizing the diverse nature of the older adult and their needs, this symposium will approach the older adult from a functional perspective and include topics that cover many of the relevant issues faced when treating aging individuals. Special emphasis will be placed on the health needs and priorities for elderly in Los Angeles and optimal mechanisms for health promotion in this population. Multiple dental cases with approaches for both the healthy, community-based patient and frailer individuals will be discussed.

Upon Completion Participants Should:

Understand polypharmacy in older adults and dental management of their side effects.
Be able to describe health needs and priorities for elderly patients in Los Angeles, in particular Latinos, and examine optimal mechanisms for health promotion in this population.
Be able to find the necessary resources to help our older adult patients and friends.
Differentiate the problem of treating older adults and the new problems that we are confronting with other at-risk populations.
Discover the history and current trajectory of the discipline of geriatric dentistry.
Appreciate the present path way and how we can influence and guide it in a more effective manner.
